Creating a Flexible Structure with basketmaker Tim Johnson

The Workshop

Looping is a fibre basketry technique that has been used in many cultures for thousands of years to make a great variety of bags, baskets, traps and even camel muzzles!

In this workshop you will use English rush and beaten esparto grass from Spain to create a variety of looped bags and baskets. You will begin with simple looping techniques and progress to more complex structures that provide creative opportunities for combining different materials to add colour and texture. You will also learn how to make your own rush cordage that can be used in looping and a variety of other soft material basketry techniques.

Using some of Tim’s collection of flexible structures, bags and baskets as reference, you will gain an overview of their variety and the special properties created by combining different materials with different looping structures.

This course is suitable for both beginners and those with some experience.
